Preparation before the staff meeting
Each teacher to bring to the meeting a selection from their short term plans for the coming few days, either a literacy or numeracy weekly planner or an outline plan for a lesson in another subject.
Each teacher to be given one of the following extracts from the report on the first term of the Gillingham Partnership Formative Assessment Project, to read and summarise in the meeting:
| Sharing learning intentions |
Extract 1 (PDF Document 20Kb) |
| Developing success criteria |
Extract 2 (PDF Document 28Kb) |
| The 'big picture' or 'aside' |
Extract 3 (PDF Document 19Kb) |
| Organisation of sharing learning intentions and success criteria (1 - 4) |
Extract 4 (PDF Document 19Kb) |
| Organisation of sharing learning intentions and success criteria (5) |
Extract 5 (PDF Document 22Kb) |
| Suggested ways forward |
Extract 6 (PDF Document 12Kb) |
Use the pre-reading, along with the 'Quotes 2' sheet to begin to discuss the benefits and practical constraints associated with the sharing of learning intentions and success criteria.
At an appropriate point in the meeting, ask teachers to carefully examine the plans they have brought, to consider:
-
how the learning intention(s) might be worded in a way which the children can understand;
-
how the success criteria could be worded;
-
at what point the learning intentions could be shared;
-
at what point the success criteria might be shared, and whether the children might be encouraged to suggest their ideas;
-
whether the use of WALT, Wilf or the other characters might be tried.
After further opportunity for discussion, challenge the staff to trial the approaches in a few selected, different lessons in the coming days. Ask teachers to evaluate from their own perspectives, and to ask children for their views of the approach. Set a deadline for feedback and further discussion.
