Provide all staff, in advance of the meeting, with a copy of the short Extract 7, which summarises some of the key findings of the part of the project dealing with self-evaluation. (The person leading the session would be well advised to read the whole section from the report (pages 35 - 54) which contains considerable detail and good examples.
Give teachers the opportunity to make initial comments on their pre-meeting reading of Extract 7. (PDF Document 11Kb)
Ask teachers to consider how they might attempt to introduce self-evaluation to the children, how it could be explained and encouraged.
Encourage teachers to introduce self-assessment in a number of lessons, in different subjects, over the next two or three weeks. Set a deadline for further discussion, and ask teachers to be prepared to offer their findings and their evaluation of the approach. Don't neglect to ask the children for their opinions too. Some of the findings from recent research indicate that children find self-evaluation both helpful in improving their own understanding of their learning, and stimulating in helping them to see their next steps more clearly.
