Who do we support?
All pupils for whom English is not the language of home, both those newly arrived in this country and those born here. Children of Asylum Seekers enrolled in school and ethnic minority pupils experiencing difficulty as a result of their language background. Schools and their staff enrolling pupils with English as an Additional Language (EAL).

What support is available?
Support for the enrolment and induction of EAL and Asylum Seeker pupils into schoolsAdvice and support for school staff with materials and strategies for working with EAL pupilsAdditional teacher/LSA support, where appropriateSupport for schools and families in maintaining pupils' attendanceIn-service training and advice about relevant aspects of other cultures and religions.

When should you refer?
All schools when approached by non-English speaking families or Asylum Seeker families seeking school places should refer to the EAL Team.

How to refer
Contact the Team Co-ordinator by phone, fax or e-mail. Where a member of the EAL Team visits the school regularly new children can be referred to them directly.

What happens next?
All children referred to the Team will have an initial assessment of their learning needs leading to a negotiated package of support for the child, the school and its staff.
